Learn about and get your dog started in the latest dog sport everyone is talking about K9 Nose Work®!  This detection-style activity is open to all breeds of dogs and is designed to develop your dog’s natural scenting abilities using their curiosity, desire to hunt, and their love of toys, food, and exercise. The art and practice of nose work has made basic detection dog skills available to companion dogs, creating a new sport arena for dog enthusiasts. It’s a great way for any dog to have fun, build confidence, and burn lots of mental and physical energy. Dogs with sight and hearing impairments, senior dogs, retired sport dogs, and dogs with sensitivity issues, among others, can also reap great benefits from the activity.

NACSW™ and K9 Nose Work® Co-founder, Amy Herot, CPDT-KA, and Leah Gangelhoff, NACSW™ Senior Faculty Member and Certified Nose Work Instructor (CNWI), share their passion and knowledge in a comprehensive introduction to the activity of K9 Nose Work®, the training philosophy as developed by the founders, and the basics of NACSW™ sanctioned K9 Nose Work® Competition Trials.

Friday’s Intro to K9 Nose Work® workshop offers an overview of the activity and sport of K9 Nose Work, builds an understanding of the K9 Nose Work training philosophy, and introduces the first steps of getting a dog started in K9 Nose Work, focusing on foundation skills for dogs and handlers.

FRIDAY PRE-REQUISITES:  Working spots for Friday are open to dogs 6 months and older with NO prior exposure or experience in K9 Nose Work or who have just recently started on primary only (food or toy). Dogs must NOT have been introduced to any target odors yet.  No prior obedience or other skills are required.

Saturday’s Intro to Odor & Skill Building workshop expands on these foundational concepts and guides teams through the process of taking dogs from searching for their primary reward (food or toy) to searching (hunting) for the first of three target odors.

SATURDAY PRE-REQUISITES:  Working spots for Saturday are open only to dogs 6 months and older who have been actively training in nose work for at least 10-12 weeks, who demonstrate strong hunting/searching foundation for their reward, and who HAVE NOT yet been introduced to any target odors. Humans must have attended an Intro to Nose Work Workshop (including this Friday, April 11 workshop), or K9 Nose Work Training Camp sometime in the past or have taken at least an introductory Nose Work course with an Associate Nose Work Instructor (ANWI) or Certified Nose Work Instructor (CNWI).

PLEASE NOTE: As stated above, there are different pre-requisites for working spots for each day, so the same dog would not qualify for a working spot for both days. Participants wishing to attend both days would fall into one of the following four categories:

1) Working spot both Friday and Saturday, but with 2 different dogs that meet the parameters for each day; 2) Working spot Friday and Audit Saturday; 3) Audit Friday and Working spot on Saturday; or 4) Audit both days.

Entries will be accepted the morning of each day from 8:00-8:45 a.m. for any working or auditing spots still available.  Early bird discounts reflected here will not apply at that time.

Working dogs must be crate trained and able to remain quietly in a crate out of your sight until it is their turn to work. Dogs will work multiple times during the workshop day and will be worked one at a time in an area separate from where all other participating dogs are crated. Dogs with reactivity toward other dogs are welcome to attend as workshop rules dictate there will be no contact or interaction among participating dogs.

Available spots in both workshops are first come, first served. In addition to the Early Bird Discounts, workshop fees listed here are at a special reduced rate specifically for the Peach Blossom Cluster Dog Show Event!
